Food Allergies

Food Allergies

There are almost as many food allergies as there are foods. For every food there seems to be at least a small sub-set of the population that suffers from allergy related symptoms when ingesting the food.

The problem of course if the ongoing move to process our foods that make knowing exactly what's in a product almost unknowable unless of course you're a food technician and have access to a full laboratory. Products that seem healthy and unrelated may use ingredients that can cause allergy related problems.

A good example is a very common allergen, peanuts. While many people can stay away from peanuts, the legume, the problem arises in the peanut oil that's used all over. From the fryer at many fast food outlets to the oil used in processing other foods, peanut oil is very popular and for some deadly. This is especially true of children allergy sufferers.

We've moved from being a nation of fresh food eaters to eating nutrients. Just look at the way our food processors market food. They tout certain nutrients or vitamins but never explain what the food DOESN'T contain in the way of vitamins and nutrients. How many or what was lost in the processing of the food? Fact is, we simply do not know.

Asthma, a respiratory illness that strikes many kids also seems to be part of the mix of food and allergies. Many allergy children also suffer with asthma and some research is now suggesting that there may be a link between allergies and asthma.

Time will tell.
