Unfortunately for someone with a food allergy, though fast food and the prepackaged foods can be difficult, if not impossible to safely navigate.

The Mayo Clinic, a recognized medical authority, states that there are eight common food allergies that make up almost 90% of the total food
intolerances. These include . . .

1. Milk and dairy products. Yogurt, cheese, ice cream etc. all fall into this category

2. Eggs
Egg whites are a common source of protein and are used in many prepackaged foods in small amounts

3. Peanuts
Many fast food restaurants prepare fried foods in peanut oil. Peanut oil is great for frying because of the relatively high temperature required for it to smoke. This makes everything served by the restaurant suspect due to cross-contamination. You may not have ordered fried food but there's no guarantee your fresh salad didn't come in contact with peanut oil

4. Wheat and Gluten
From a children's allergy perspective, this is probably one of the most challenging to keep under control. Wheat-based products and gluten are used in many products. We're talking about most baked goods, all breads, rolls, crackers, tortillas, fried foods breading and anything else where flour is an ingredient.

5. Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
Once again, oils are to be suspected. Nut oil is manufactured into an extract and used for flavoring many foods. The problem is that because it's used in such small quantities, it's not normally listed with the ingredients. Tree Nut shells have also found their way into many common products as an abrasive.

6. Fish
While many kids don't like a lot of fish, they seem to be drawn into any type of sauce. Many commercial steak and Worcestershire sauces are anchovy fish based. Many Asian foods also use fish oils and products and cooking and in the recipes.

7. Shellfish - shrimp and lobster

8. Soy
Soyuz found them a lot of prepackaged products. Many cereals, canned soups, packaged sauces, gravies and even many baked goods can all have a story or story products as part of the recipe.

We do know however that many foods can cause an elevated eosinophil food allergy reaction. The link between various food allergies and other symptoms is well established however.

Living with allergies as an adult is difficult but may at times seem almost impossible for children. When dealing with a child allergy, try to take the little ones feelings into consideration. When possible, choose restaurants that are safe so they can without having to worry.
