Elevated Eosinophil and Food Allergy

Are Elevated Eosinophil and Food Allergy Related?

So you may have recently been to visit the local medical establishment and through the use of various tests have been told about elevated eosinophil. In lay persons terms, these are white blood cells that fight infection and are an important part of immunological response to many illnesses including allergies and asthma.

Eosinophil granulocytes, or sometimes called acidophils are very important to your system and are apparently related to common allergy symptoms. This is because these cells release histamines and peroxidase protein sequences.

Allergic triggers such as a food sensitivity can cause a chain reaction of events that can elevate these white blood cells and cause the allergy reactions experienced due to the trigger. So if you have a relatively mild peanut allergy and are exposed to the legume, chances are that this will in turn start a chain reaction of events that bring on the symptoms.

While most of us don't have access to a medical laboratory, it's possible to do some initial research into allergic symptoms and certain food exposure. Eliminating certain suspect foods for a couple of weeks can help direct your effort if symptoms improve after removing the food allergens.

One good way to start this quest is to consider a food diary. By writing down everything eaten, it's easier to pinpoint the suspect foods where more research tests and trials should be focused.

Your doctor can also help with the identification of allergens but will appreciate your initial work to help identify the suspected areas of concern. The key is to identify those foods that trigger an autoimmune response and cause eosinophil blood counts to increase.

The best option is to use common sense and be aware that some people have very violent and serious reactions caused by food allergies. If this is you, be certain to have the necessary treatment medications available at all times

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Lung -- Balloon-like structures in the chest that bring oxygen into the body and expel carbon dioxide from the body.

  • Rhinitis -- This is a clinical term for the following symptoms: nasal blockage (congestion), nasal discharge (runny nose), nasal itching and sneezing. The cause is typically infection (viral, mostly), allergy, structural, or the all-important 'other'. For more on rhinitis, read this fact sheet. Rhinitis often triggers flares in susceptible asthmatics, like my son for one. Ed has vasomotor rhinitis, which means he gets a runny nose for no explicable reason. :/

  • Reflux -- Short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, also commonly known as GERD, it is a chronic condition which afflicts many asthmatics. The esophageal flap which seals the stomach from the lower esophagus does not remain closed when it should, particularly when the patient is reclining, and this allows stomach acid and its fumes, and partially-digested contents to escape upwards through the esophagus. This material can be aspirated into the lungs, triggering an asthma attack.
