Elevated Eosinophil and Food Allergy

Are Elevated Eosinophil and Food Allergy Related?

So you may have recently been to visit the local medical establishment and through the use of various tests have been told about elevated eosinophil. In lay persons terms, these are white blood cells that fight infection and are an important part of immunological response to many illnesses including allergies and asthma.

Eosinophil granulocytes, or sometimes called acidophils are very important to your system and are apparently related to common allergy symptoms. This is because these cells release histamines and peroxidase protein sequences.

Allergic triggers such as a food sensitivity can cause a chain reaction of events that can elevate these white blood cells and cause the allergy reactions experienced due to the trigger. So if you have a relatively mild peanut allergy and are exposed to the legume, chances are that this will in turn start a chain reaction of events that bring on the symptoms.

While most of us don't have access to a medical laboratory, it's possible to do some initial research into allergic symptoms and certain food exposure. Eliminating certain suspect foods for a couple of weeks can help direct your effort if symptoms improve after removing the food allergens.

One good way to start this quest is to consider a food diary. By writing down everything eaten, it's easier to pinpoint the suspect foods where more research tests and trials should be focused.

Your doctor can also help with the identification of allergens but will appreciate your initial work to help identify the suspected areas of concern. The key is to identify those foods that trigger an autoimmune response and cause eosinophil blood counts to increase.

The best option is to use common sense and be aware that some people have very violent and serious reactions caused by food allergies. If this is you, be certain to have the necessary treatment medications available at all times

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) -- A virus that affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts, it is most prevalent in lower respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Most frequently seen in children from birth to age three, RSV is also a common cause of pneumonia in children. The RSV Info Center is a great resource for more about this virus.

  • Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) -- Small hand-held aerosol canister used to deliver inhaled drugs. Surprisingly enough, about 80-90% of an MDI dose is left in the mouth and throat, meaning only 10-20% of the dose makes it to the lungs. This is taken into account when a dosage is prescribed, so do NOT increase the dosage on your own to accommodate this.

  • Anaphylaxis -- Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe, frightening and life-threatening allergic reaction. The reaction, although rare, can occur after an insect sting, or as a reaction to an injected drug -- for example, penicillin or antitetanus (horse) serum. Less commonly, the reaction occurs after a particular food or drug has been taken by mouth.
