Food Allergies

There are almost as many food allergies as there are foods. For every food there seems to be at least a small sub-set of the population that suffers from allergy related symptoms when ingesting the food.

The problem of course if the ongoing move to process our foods that make knowing exactly what's in a product almost unknowable unless of course you're a food technician and have access to a full laboratory. Products that seem healthy and unrelated may use ingredients that can cause allergy related problems.

A good example is a very common allergen, peanuts. While many people can stay away from peanuts, the legume, the problem arises in the peanut oil that's used all over. From the fryer at many fast food outlets to the oil used in processing other foods, peanut oil is very popular and for some deadly. This is especially true of child allergy sufferers.

So the question remains if the allergic reactions caused by specific food based allergies are linked to development of an asthmatic condition. Results unfortuneately are inconclusive in this regard with more research needing to be done.

We do know however that many foods can cause an allergie reaction which in turn causes an elevated eosinophil food allergy reaction.

We've moved from being a nation of fresh food eaters to eating nutrients. Just look at the way our food processors market food. They tout certain nutrients or vitamins but never explain what the food DOESN'T contain in the way of vitamins and nutrients. How many or what was lost in the processing of the food? Fact is, we simply do not know.

Asthma, a respiratory illness that strikes many kids also seems to be part of the mix of food and allergies. Many children allergy sufferers also have issues with asthma symptoms and some research is now suggesting that there may be a link between allergies and asthma.

Time will tell.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Inhalers -- Non-mechanical devices for delivering asthma medication into the airways. There are four types: metered dose (MDIs), breath actuated, dry powder, and Turbuhaler. Here's a terrific fact sheet about the different inhalers.

  • Anti-Cholinergic Drugs -- These agents suppress some of the effects of acetylcholine, a short-acting neurotransmitter that stimulates the autonomic nervous system. Atrovent (ipatropium bromide) is an anticholinergic sometimes used in asthma patients to alleviate bronchospams but it's more commonly prescribed for COPD and chronic bronchitis. More on anti-cholinergics.

  • Rhinitis -- Rhinitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining inside the nose, often due to an allergy to pollen, dust or other airborne substances. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is also known as hay fever, a disorder that causes sneezing, itching, a runny nose and nasal congestion.
