Asthma Steroids Work Wonders but can be Dangerous

Asthma steroids have been a life saver for many people suffering from asthma. This doesn't mean however that this class of corticosteroids are right for everyong. As parents, it's critical to know the side effects of all medicine you use or give children. The steroids and other drugs in the todays asthma medications can be strong and dangerous if not used as directed.

This is from a recent news story where a little girl had been diagnosed with asthma from age one, after several incidences of night time coughing. This was treated with inhaled cortices.

Then at 18 months of age, she was prescribed an asthma steroid. that alarmingly wasn't reccomended for anyone under the age of 4. At the time, this child was 18 months old. Instead of making her better however, this drug made her dangerously ill and she suffered stomach pains, vomiting, fitting and loss of pains. All because of the wrong prescription of a very popular and effective asthma steroid.

This drug is a corticosteroid that is used by asthmatic victims to control asthma and also allergic rhinitis. What happened in this case was a wrong prescription of the asthma steroid. While the British Medical Association Guide to Drugs advise against giving most asthma steroids to those under 4 year old.

Note that despite what has been said about asthma steroids, it works for many asthma victims. So, the point might be that there could be nothing wrong with taking cortices for the right people. Many asthma medicines however aren't steriod based but sometimes the need for fast action drugs cannot be replced with anything else.

One lesson to learn is that there is the importance of getting the right doctor to prescribe asthma drugs for you and your children. According to the news article "there are hundreds of thousands of doctor-caused mishaps, injuries and deaths that go unreported, unrecognized and uninvestigated every year".

And remember that the first and last line of defense against medical errors rests with parents. Know how the medicines should affect your little one and get help if it's not working as expected. Bronchiole -- Small airway passages that branch off the lungs' larger bronchial tubes. Bronchodilator drugs -- Bronchodilators are a group of drugs that reduce spasms in the airways in the lungs.
