Asthma is divided into two broad categories. The first category is Extrinsic and the second category is intrinsic.

Extrinsic asthma, as the name implies, is caused by external factors, while intrinsic, is caused by internal factors.

On a larger perspective, intrinsic asthma seems to originate inside the body, hence the name "intrinsic". It has nothing to do with allergy, unlike the extrinsic asthma that does not originate from inside the body but from external factors, such as environmental allergens.

That is why intrinsic asthma is known as a non-allergy-related asthma. An asthmatic cough is a symptom but in no way is the only indicator of asthma.

Some of the internal factors that bring about intrinsic asthma include-

  • Inhalation of chemicals into the body of victims. Such chemicals include tobacco and other smoke, body or perfume spray and other kinds of fumes.

  • An infection of the chest can also trigger intrinsic asthma.

  • Other kinds of feelings that victims experience from within can also cause intrinsic asthma- such as stress, anger, etc.

Treating intrinsic asthma is dependent on what is responsible for the asthma in the first place or what responsible for triggering it is.

The best way of preventing intrinsic asthma is to stay away from the factors enumerated above, such as different kinds of smoke, different kinds of spray or fume and also different kinds of emotional trauma.

So, if you are always suffer intrinsic asthma and yet love going to bar where you are always exposed to tobacco smoke, then you have to change these habits to be sure you keep intrinsic asthma at bay.

So no matter what type of bronchial asthma that's diagnosed, the asthma treatments all involve keeping environmental issues under control

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Intrinsic asthma -- Intrinsic asthma is asthma that has no apparent external cause.

  • Reflux -- Short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, also commonly known as GERD, it is a chronic condition which afflicts many asthmatics. The esophageal flap which seals the stomach from the lower esophagus does not remain closed when it should, particularly when the patient is reclining, and this allows stomach acid and its fumes, and partially-digested contents to escape upwards through the esophagus. This material can be aspirated into the lungs, triggering an asthma attack.

  • GERD -- Acronym for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, which has a strong relationship with asthma in a large percentage of patients. More links on GERD in children. See also reflux.
