Being an asthmatic, I always make it a point of duty to spend time on a regular basis researching more ways of staying safe and sound with the disease. I was researching the Internet when I came across an interesting write-up about asthma by Drs Ralph and Lahni DeAmicis.

They are both Naturopathic Physicians and their write-up talked about the negative influence of detergents on asthmatic victims.

It was very interesting so I thought it wise to share this with you. It can help you in preventing allergic asthma.

According to them, the detergents that parents use in washing their children's clothes and sheets contain a large amount of irritating phosphates.

The phosphates, they claimed, are not only a major irritant to the skin and respiratory system, but are also a source of serious pollution, and a component in the global warming problem.

In the United States, they claim that the biggest selling detergents contain large amounts of these irritating phosphates. This, they claimed, could be one of the reasons why asthma is on the increase in the developed world, like the United States.

IIf correct, potentially effective asthma treatments should also include an understanding of the products in general use today thoroughout your home.

To support their claims, they talked about a testing done in Europe which showed that "while sleeping, people are between two thousand and ten thousand times more sensitive to chemical and electromagnetic pollution than while awake".

So, if a child's night clothes, pillow cases and bed sheets are washed with detergents that contain these chemical irritants, the child will be exposed to these while sleeping. It could be a bad allergic asthma for your child.

Going further, they explained that allergies and asthma are not produced by a single irritant, but by a gathering of some minor irritants which all sooner or later over-power the body's ability to adapt- thereby triggering a respiratory problem like asthma. Hence the possible "smoking gun" to tie allergies to asthmatic attacks and a possible effective treatment of the disease.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Peak Flow Meter/Monitor -- A device used to measure lung capacity, known as Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF). The patient exhales forcefully into a mouthpiece and the force of the exhalation triggers a measurement device to register a numeric value. Typically, an Asthma Management Program will specify appropriate steps/medications to adminster dependent on the patient's peak flow capacity.

  • Ketotifen furoate -- An antihistamine not available in the United States. Sold in Canada and the EC as Zaditen and is approved for use in children. Commonly prescribed as a preventive anti-allergy medication.

  • Eczema -- Irritation of the skin that often plagues asthmatics although the link between the two is not known. Presents as an itchy rash; has been called the 'itch that rashes' since the itch usually occurs first and effective treatment may prevent or mitigate the rash. Look for small crusty scales or blisters on the head, face and neck, or the insides of elbows, wrists and knees.
