triggers of asthma, it is good for your health and so should be engaged in but only to the extent that the asthma condition can be controlled.

. and that's a big but...

You should try as much as possible to avoid strenuous exercising and only engage in the types of exercises or sports that will not put you in harm's way... in view of your asthmatic condition. Breathing take priority over a muscular body.

For example, don't engage in any form of very long distance races. Such exercises can leave you gasping for breath... which is not a good thing for you as an asthmatic victim. Even people without asthma find it difficult after a long distance race, let alone you that have an asthmatic condition.

Also, avoid strenuous sports like football, basketball, and other such sports that would put too much pressure on you.

The kinds of exercises and sports you can engage in which would not pose a danger to you as an asthmatic victim includes the following:

- Swimming is good for you as an asthmatic victim because it doesn't put too much pressure on you and can be done easily at your own pace.

- Karate can also be a good type of exercise which won't put you in harm's way.

- Golf is an excellent excercise sport for you as an asthmatic patient.

The above mentioned exercises and sports do not put too much pressure on you, especially sports like golf.

So, your asthmatic condition should not prevent you from engaging in sports or a reasonable exercising program. The only thing is to do ONLY those types of exercises and sports that won't trigger a severe asthmatic episode. Of course, smoking and asthma are not a good combination with exercise. Smoking compromises your pulmonary capacity which limits your ability to exercise.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Thoracentesis -- Using a long, thin needle inserted between the ribs to remove fluid from the pleura.

  • Antibody -- An antibody is a protein (also called an immunoglobulin) that is manufactured by types of white blood cell to neutralize an antigen or foreign protein. Bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms commonly contain many antigens, as do pollens, dust mites, molds, foods and other substances. Although many types of antibodies are protective, inappropriate or excessive formation of certain types of antibodies may lead to illness. When the body forms a type of antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E), allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema may result when the patient is again exposed to the substance (whereby an antigen is then termed an allergen) that caused IgE antibody formation.

  • Eczema -- Irritation of the skin that often plagues asthmatics although the link between the two is not known. Presents as an itchy rash; has been called the 'itch that rashes' since the itch usually occurs first and effective treatment may prevent or mitigate the rash. Look for small crusty scales or blisters on the head, face and neck, or the insides of elbows, wrists and knees.
