GERD and Bronchial Spasms

GERD and Bronchial Spasms in Children

GERD is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, better known as acid reflux.  This has been identified as a contributor to the number of chronic bronchitis sufferers in the country.  Acid reflux, is when your stomach acids work their way back up into the esophageal tube.  This is caused by the esophageal sphincter (LES), which is a band of muscles at the end of the esophagus, not tightening completely.

The LES should act like a one-way valve that lets your food pass into the stomach by relaxing, then closing back off once the food is in the stomach.  Instead, the esophageal sphincter doesn't constrict completely and relaxes enough so that stomach acid moves to other parts of your system.  This then causes discomfort and a strong burning sensation that can irritate and infect the bronchial passageways thereby causing bronchial spasms.

This is a particularly difficult symptom to treat with a very young.  Babies 3 to 6 and up to 12 months are the most difficult to diagnose and treat.  Mainly because they are unable to explain the specific problems and symptoms.  The usual treatment GERD depends on the severity of the symptoms.

Antacids.  Rolaids, Tums, Mylanta etc.

H-2-receptor blockers. Over-the-counter medications such as Tagamet ,Pepcid  and Zantac are part of this group of drugs.

Proton pump inhibitors. These medications block acid production and allow time for damaged esophageal tissue to heal. Omeprazole, trade name Prilosec, was previously available only by prescription, but now is available in an over-the-counter form.

Surgery.  In 2003 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), approved Enteryx, which is implanted to help people with GERD like symptoms.  An Enteryx, device prevents stomach acid from refluxing or passing back up into the esophagus.

It's especially important to use caution when treating both babies and toddlers.  Young children aged one to three years also need special care before giving them treatment.

It's especially a good idea to err on the side of caution when you have a sick little one. This is espeically important for those who are under four years old and with special consideration for those under one or two.  Homeopathy and bronchitis, or any other so called natural remedy or cure is dangerous when dealing with bronchitis. A quick visit to your pediatrician is the right course of action.

In the meantime, don't feed your baby then immediately lay him in bed.  Lying flat after a meal can in some cases, your take the symptoms of GERD causing discomfort
