According to the Mayo Clinic, a well recognized medical facility, acid reflux disease or Gerd can cause a chronic cough. Gerd is simply stomach acids that see backup and inherent take the lining of your esophagus.

Although not a medical professional, it stands to reason that anything that can hear it take your lungs are bronchial tubes is a good candidate to cause irritation and even bronchitis.

This is important to recognize as chronic bronchitis symptoms can develop into serious pulmonary diseases such as asthma, and even pneumonia.

So what types of things, should you be on the lookout for?

I think it basically breaks down into two categories. Fumes and odors should probably be considered together while particulate matter is considered separately.

In the fumes and odor category, we're not simply talking about industrial chemicals, but those that may be commonly found around your home.
These may include:

Paints and coatings

Personal care products such as shampoos

Household cleaners

Automotive liquids, oils and lubricants

It's important not to assume that the smell of a room freshener, while pleasant to many, cannot irritate someone else's bronchial passages. Even such mundane things as laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets have odors that can cause sensitive people breathing distress.

Particulate matter is nothing more than very fine pieces of dust. Most dust is actually dry skin cells that have fallen off the people who live in a home. Some dust however is released from natural fibers such as cotton. The simple act of making your bed, and flossing your pillow can release huge amounts of dust and fabric particles into the air that may irritate sensitive lungs.

Although not dust, pollen and other outside air "floaties" can also trigger a bronchial episode in people with a sensitivity or allergy to the pollen.

Some Mental Health Related Definitions & Terms:

  • Lung -- Balloon-like structures in the chest that bring oxygen into the body and expel carbon dioxide from the body.

  • Breath Actuated Inhaler -- It is similar to an MDI except that the beginning of inhalation is what triggers the release of the medication. Maxair, salbutamol/albuterol and beclomethasone are available in breath actuated inhaler form in some countries. With the recent ban of CFC-based propellants in the US, breath actuated inhaler devices are becoming popular in the States.

  • Ipatropium bromide -- Sold under the Atrovent name, it is a longer-acting, short-term bronchodilator than the more commonly used albuterol. Ipatropium bromide is not as fact-acting, however, and is generally not used in back-to-back treatments the way albuterol can be. A common use (especially in an hospital or ER/critical care setting)
