Chronic Bronchitis

A Never-Ending Battle with Chronic Bronchitis

Bronchitis, like many disorders can be classified based on length of time someone has symptoms. Chronic bronchitis is considered long-lasting or long term. It is typically caused by exposure to smoking or other air pollutants. This type of bronchitis tends to stay around much longer and it's not unusual to have ongoing symptoms for months or years.
Acute bronchitis however, simply means short-term and is typical of many people who get the flu or other viral infections. An acute case of bronchitis typically clears up in days to weeks time span.

Chronic bronchial infections are many times caused by environmental factors. These may include:

Exposure to dust
certain odors or fumes
smoking ( both primary and secondhand)

According to the Mayo Clinic, a well regarded medical facility, bronchitis can also be caused from stomach acid irritating for food pipe or esophagus. This is better known as acid reflux disease.

Chronic bronchitis is often associated with the yellow or green mucus that's coughed up a by the person with bronchitis. This is an indication an infection, because when the air passages or bronchial tubes become your tubes become inflamed, they produce the mucus that's been coughed up.

Some of the more common signs and symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, such as bronchitis may include...

Wheezing
Difficulty Breathing
Congestion
a Tight Feeling around the Chest

If you're dealing with bronchitis in a child, you can get them to take several deep breaths and listen to how they breathe. Wheezing often sounds as if there is an air leak, while breathing are holding their breath. Remember that wheezing is not necessarily dangerous, but is a symptom of an upper respiratory infection.

To gain faster relief, a person bronchitis should consider visiting the doctor to get medications for the infection. One medication given to my children was Loviscol®. It's used as a therapy for chronic respiratory tract disorders in children.

There is no cure for chronic bronchitis and many who don't smoke but continue to suffer ongoing respiratory infections need to consider changes in their environment to limit exposure to things that may trigger a pulmonary or lung related illness.

This is NOT the typical influenza or flu and bronchitis you might get from co workers. That type of bronchitis is the acute or short term variety typically caused by a viral or bacterial source.

To deal with chronic bronchitis, often times you will need to focus on the triggers that can cause the problem in the first place. This is one reason why I'm offering a free report on how to remove asthma, allergy and bronchitis triggers from your home.

Health Related Definitions & Terms:

  • Epinephrine -- Epinephrine is a naturally occurring hormone, also called adrenaline. It is one of two chemicals (the other is norepinephrine) released by the adrenal gland. Epinephrine increases the speed and force of heartbeats and, thereby, the work that can be done by the heart. It dilates the airways to improve breathing and narrows blood vessels in the skin and intestine so that an increased flow of blood reaches the muscles and allows them to cope with the demands of exercise. Epinephrine has been produced synthetically as a drug since 1900. It remains the drug of choice for treatment of anaphylaxis.

  • Intubate / Intubation -- Procedure whereby an endotracheal tube is inserted through the nose or mouth into the trachea, through which oxygen is forcefully pumped by a ventilator. A cuff on the tracheal end inflates to create a tight seal in the trachea area (although the cuff isn't required with infants) and a tight-fitting mask is placed over the nose and mouth. This differs from a tracheotomy, in which a small incision is made in the neck area, near the Adam's Apple, through which a shorter, more rigid endotracheal tube and cuff are inserted. Intubation is required if an acute asthma attack is not responsive to medication. It's not pretty, for the patient or the parent.

  • GERD -- Acronym for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, which has a strong relationship with asthma in a large percentage of patients. More links on GERD in children. See also reflux.
