Did you know that asthma strikes children of parents in the upper income brackets more than poorer families? There are more rich children with asthma than poor children who have asthma. Some research has suggested the reason is that more income translates to better health care and wealthier families have a better opportunity to obtain a proper diagnosis.

Another theory that aligns with known immunological science is that children born in poor environment tend to develop a more robust immunity system because of the early childhood infections they get from these poor environments. Researchers always seem to focus on poor children being less healthy because of their environment but this same environment may be helping them develop a robust immunity to many of the common afflictions of life.

We know that the exposure to all the bugs - bacteria and viral - in these dirtier environments gives these children early immunity which later may help to protect them against allergies that cause, trigger or worsen asthma.

This is unlike the children from higher income families who grow up in a more bacteria-free and cleaner environment. In such environments they don't get the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of illness related bacteria and germs etc.

Ever notice how poor kids are out playing and having a good time? These kids, and I was one of them, could always be counted on to find water to play in even if in the gutter. Many richer kids however, are the ones who have been raised to worry about every bit of dirt, looking their best, playing organized sports as safely as possible. The theory, and I don't know if it's completely accurate, is that as kids grow up and are exposed to different germs, bacteria and diseases, they develop a certain level of immunity that protects them from contracting the illness.

This seems to make sense considering we encourage this type of biological immunity development through the use of immunizations. Many of the childhood vaccines we give our children are actually a mutated or weakened part of the actual disease. By giving the kids the weakened disease, their bodies are able to develop an immunity toward the actual disease. It must work as a number of the most deadly childhood diseases, from measles and rubella have dropped dramatically in the last few decades.

To explain this information on childhood asthma further, it is worth remembering that we humans are made in a very unique way. Our bodies have all that it needs to take care of itself. It develops its own immunity to keep it safe from certain bacteria. And the earlier this happens, the better. When exposed to certain bacteria in early life, our bodies produce its own immunity to fight against the bacteria and other forms of bacteria in later life.

But if the body doesn't get exposed to these early bacteria, it goes to rest and doesn't develop the early immunity to the bacteria and other allergens.

Asthma and pregnancy may also be a factor in the future condition of a child. There seems to be some connection, though researchers haven't definately established it that allergies and asthma are somehow related. Their is also some research that suggests asthma may be hereditary.

By keeping kids in a clean and sterile environment, we may actually be causing them to actually be weaker from a disease immunity standpoint. Many kids of higher income families can be exposed to more asthma causing triggers and the result is wealthier children having more instances of asthma. They just don't develop the same type of early immunity to the allergens that cause, trigger or worsen asthma.

Is it possible that by worrying about our kids cleanliness to much, we actually are making them weaker as humans?

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Thrush -- Candida (yeast) infection in the mouth, generally caused by residue from MDI's, particularly steroid inhalers. Use of a spacer device and rinsing immediately after an inhaler dose can help reduce incidence of thrush.

  • Bronchoscopy -- A procedure in which a lighted, tube-like instrument is passed into the large air passageways of the lungs.

  • Histamine -- Histamine is a chemical present in many cells throughout the body that is released during an allergic reaction. Histamine is one of the substances responsible for the symptoms of inflammation and is the major reason for running of the nose, sneezing and itching in allergic rhinitis. It also stimulates production of acid by the stomach and narrows the bronchi or airways in the lungs.
