Pediatric Aasthma

Do you know all these factors that can trigger Pediatric Asthma?

Going on the offensive against Pediatric Asthma

The term pediatric simply refers to anything that has to do with children. Pediatricians are medical doctors who specialize in treating children.

Pediatric asthma therefore refers to asthma that affects children. So all children including premature newborns, neonates, infants, toddlers, children and adolescents... all under 17 years old are in this category that suffer from asthma or an asthmatic condition fall under the term "pediatric asthma."

The bigger question is why do children seem to suffer more from asthma than adults. One of the possible reasons suggested by experts on the subject of pediatric asthma is that children are more prone to difficulties breathing because their airways are narrower than the those of adults. If true, it explains why many of the things that appear to trigger a more serious asthma attack in children may only cause a slight reaction in adults.

In pediatric asthma, below are some of the common factors that can trigger an asthmatic episode.

- Exposure to cigarette smoke,

- Exposure to strong smell from perfumes, home spray, wet paint, flowers, strong spices

- Exposure to dust

- Exposure to pollen

- Excess exercise

- Infections that are viral in nature. These types of viral infections include the common cold.

- Exposure to the hair or dander of animals.

- Exposure to harmful chemicals from the air or even food the kids eat.

- Serious changes in weather also trigger off asthma- especially cold weather.

- Certain medications like aspirin could also be one of the factors that can bring on an asthma attack

So, if you want to avoid the severe pediatric asthma episodes, and possibly even save the life of your little children, ensure that you understand what are the common causes that can begin an asthma episode. And always remember to keep the inhalers and medicine available for that inevitable time when asthma hits.

By limiting exposure to those things that can trigger a serious pediatric asthma attack, and having the right medications available when needed, you are assuring your child a long and healthier life. It's only through getting childhood asthma education can you do the things necessary to make the little ones life better.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Ventilator -- Machine that breathes for patient when patient's lungs can no longer inhale/exhale on their own. Requires intubation. It is generally the last resort when a patient is in status asthmaticus.

  • Sweat (Chloride) Test -- Common test for Cystic Fibrosis, whose symptoms can be very similar to asthma. When a child begins to present asthma symptoms a sweat test is typically done to rule out CF as a cause. The child's forearm or shin is electrically stimulated to produce perspiration, which is then measured for salt (chloride) content using a special digital machine. Too much salt in the sweat indicates CF. A borderline reading will usually result in retesting. It is not painful and usually takes about an hour or less from start to finish. Sometimes two locations are tested (left and right forearms) for quality control. For more information on sweat testing, visit www.cff.org.

  • Diaphragm -- The diaphragm is a strong muscle just below the lungs. When your breathe in and out, the diaphragm moves downwards and upwards against the lungs.
