Asthma Home Treatment vs. Asthma Clinic Treatment

This isn't to say that an asthma clinic treatment plan is any better only that there is a need to accurately diagnose a condition before a treatment plan can be developed.

A doctor will most likely begin by obtaining as much information as possible. A complete medical history or profile will first be done. This is a lot of Q&A about your previous medical condition.

Next up would be tests to determine lung function. There are a variety of pulmonary function tests available that include spirometry along with lung diffusion and capacity tests.

To further diagnose the condition, chest x rays, various blood tests and even an electrocardiogram may be done.

The condition has a lot of variability in intensity that help determine the correct asthma home treatment strategy for your illness. On top of the complex diagnosis of any respiratory condition, the severity can also be categorized.
Four levels of asthma are based on symptomatic conditions and test results. These include:

Mild intermittent where symptoms may come and go erratically Mild persistent or symptoms are evident about twice a week, Moderate persistent asthma which is every day symptoms Severe persistent being symptoms are evident during both day and night.

Most doctors will then develop an asthma clinic treatment plan to address specific issues. They will prescribe, depending on the final diagnosis, drugs to control the symptoms long term and possibly short term as well. These include quick Relief medications. They are for fast though short term relief during a serious episode or attack.

These are used as the first line of defense in most asthma home treatment programs and are taken at the first signs of an impending attack. Long term medications are also available and usually taken daily to control persistent asthma.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Antibody -- An antibody is a protein (also called an immunoglobulin) that is manufactured by types of white blood cell to neutralize an antigen or foreign protein. Bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms commonly contain many antigens, as do pollens, dust mites, molds, foods and other substances. Although many types of antibodies are protective, inappropriate or excessive formation of certain types of antibodies may lead to illness. When the body forms a type of antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E), allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema may result when the patient is again exposed to the substance (whereby an antigen is then termed an allergen) that caused IgE antibody formation.

  • Antigen -- An antigen is a substance that can trigger an immune response, resulting in production of an antibody as part of the body's defense against infection and disease. Many antigens are foreign proteins (those not found naturally in the body). An allergen is a special type of antigen that causes an IgE antibody response.

  • Sinus -- The sinuses (paranasal sinuses) are air cavities within the facial bones. They are lined by mucous membranes similar to those in other parts of the airways.
