Bronchial Thermoplasty

Is Bronchial Thermoplasty May Be the Future of Asthma Treatment

Some of the latest information from researchers concerning a proposed treatment of asthma called bronchial thermoplasy seems to be quite promising.  The idea is to use a special probe that is then placed into the airway.  Using radio-waves, the problem then modifies the muscle tissue in a way that limits it's ability to be triggered into spasm and close off.

What if there was a way to DRAMATICALLY increase your Peak Flow breathing capacity

For just a minute think how great it would be without the Risk or Worry of :

Increased shortness of breath
Wheezing
Disturbed sleep caused coughing
Chest tightness or pain Increased need to use bronchodilators
A fall in peak flow rates

The device is called the Alair System and is from Asthmatx Inc.  A bronchoscope is used to place the device into the airway which then is expanded against the airway walls.  A controlled radio frequency is used to heat the airway smoothing the muscle making it more difficult to go into spasm in response to an irritation or inflammation.

While the jury is still out on this new treatment option, it does seem to work and is effectives for about a year.  Other studies have suggested that the treatment may actually be viable for 2 years or so but more research needs to be done.

A quick check on the forums and many asthma sufferers that post messages are skeptical however.  They feel that this treatment option is probably a more expensive replacement for the more typical steroidal inhaler.

While being unconvinced that this new treatment may be nothing more than yet another medical device company enriching themselves at our expense, I think it's more better to at least consider that the bronchial thermoplasty procedure may be a significant step forward in the fight against asthma.

If nothing else, it may be of benefit for those asthmatics that cannot for one reason or another tolerate the existing medications.  There are many people that have problems with the various steroid options and this may be the ticket they need for relief.

There's also the case against long term medication use.  Although many drugs we take are without a doubt helpful, it certainly would be better health wise not to add these into our systems.  If the Alair Bronchial Thermoplasty System can lower the incidence of attack, it is reasonable to assume the need for the medications to control those attacks would lessen.  This, by anyone' measure is a good thing.

Asthma and Respiratory Definitions & Terms:

  • Antigen -- An antigen is a substance that can trigger an immune response, resulting in production of an antibody as part of the body's defense against infection and disease. Many antigens are foreign proteins (those not found naturally in the body). An allergen is a special type of antigen that causes an IgE antibody response.

  • Pneumonia -- A lung infection that can be caused by different types of germs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Although different types of pneumonia tend to affect children in different age groups, pneumonia is most commonly caused by viruses, like RSV. Symptoms include: fever, chills, cough, rapid breathing, breathing that makes a grunting or wheezing sound, labored breathing that makes a rib muscles retract, vomiting, chest pain, abdominal pain, decreased activity, loss of appetite (in older children) or poor feeding (in infants,) and bluish or gray color of the lips and fingernails.

  • Anaphylaxis -- Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe, frightening and life-threatening allergic reaction. The reaction, although rare, can occur after an insect sting, or as a reaction to an injected drug -- for example, penicillin or antitetanus (horse) serum. Less commonly, the reaction occurs after a particular food or drug has been taken by mouth.
